Spirit of Tasmania Terminal, Geelong

The new Spirit of Tasmania terminal on the Victorian side of the ship’s route was opened in 2022. Team members worked closely with the main contractor Fitzgerald Constructions to assist with design management of the permanent structed and engineering design of the temporary hanging formwork system for the overwater end dolphin structure (22m long and approx 170 cubic metres of concrete). Some interesting features of the temporary design included:

• Working within a physically constrained area, which required consideration of the handling and stripping of formwork,

• A series of rear hanging steel columns to hang the wet concrete weight as well as provide lateral support to the rear side shutters

• Using the 3 no. permanent piles for the approach structure to support the rear hanging beams
